The Master Potter

The Master Potter

An extension of Community Hope Ministries

John Hunter

Master Potter

As well as working with children at risk John runs his own pottery studio. He won many national pottery awards in the southern African country. His pottery is defined by its quality, simplicity and beauty. He finishes his work in a wood-fired kiln. Wood firing gives it a different, more interesting, look – a range of color and texture that can only be accomplished this way.

In 2005 they established Community Hope School in Katutura, to assist the Namibian government in educating the country’s poorest children. They wanted it to be more than just a school; more like a family. The children receive breakfast, snacks and a main meal. Today Community Hope is a youth discipleship center called the Lighthouse. Their ministry is supported by churches and donors in the U.S.A. Hunter gives talks about their work in Namibia. He lectures to congregations about God, the Master Potter, with a portable pottery wheel.

One of his former apprentices, calls Hunter the “master-potter-preacher-man” and this exemplifies his life work.

The flower-power culture of the hippies did not pass them by. When he and Suzanne met, they were both into yoga. In 1972 they set off for India to find a guru. En route they came across the Dilaram House in Kabul, Afghanistan led by Floyd McClung, and committed their lives to Christ.

As he studied the Bible he found references to God, the potter. John uses his own skill and training to teach the many lessons that can be learned from this aspect of God’s nature and character.
