John and Suzanne Hunter

The Hunters moved to Namibia in 1997 and started Teachers for Africa. In 2005 they established Community Hope School in Katutura, to educate some of the country’s poorest children. As well as working with children at risk John established and ran his own pottery studio and served as vice-chair of the Potters Association of Namibia.

Where?

KATUTURA, NAMIBIA

Two-thirds of Windhoek’s 350,000 people live in Katutura. They were forcibly evicted from their previous homes during Apartheid under the hated “Group Areas Act” and were resettled here against their will. Katutura means “A place I do not live.” While Apartheid laws have been abolished they have left their mark on Windhoek and the peoples of Namibia. The lingering hurt of forced racial, economic, and educational division still needs to be healed. Foreign Aid and Government programs are not sufficient by themselves. Only the transforming power of the Gospel will make any lasting change.

How?

COMMUNITY HOPE MINISTRIES

In the midst of this crisis God has planted seeds of hope. The Biblical purpose of education is to know and love God. Education based on sound learning and Biblical principles build up individuals who will transform their own communities. Treating each child as valuable transforms a poor child’s view of himself and the God who made them in His image. Each child at Community Hope has opportunity to discover the love and power of God everyday. Our kids receive quality tutoring, daily meals and snacks with a nutritious lunch along with a creative art based discipleship.

Why?

HIV/AIDS PANDEMIC

HIV/AIDS WORLDWIDE HAS KILLED OVER 27 MILLION and in Africa has left many children without parents to care for them. With 8-12% of the adult population HIV+ in Namibia this has devastated the children in Katutura. Often, a grandmother will be the only one caring for her grandchildren.  A return to a Just, Biblical, Worldview is God’s answer, one, where each child’s value is recognized.

Who?

CHILDREN OF THE DAMARA TRIBE

The Damara people are one of the poorest Namibian people groups who were forcibly resettled. It is here, in their neighborhood, that we have joined others in offering a hope and a future to the needy children and families.

Today!

THE LIGHTHOUSE

The Lighthouse is the newest ministry of Community Hope. Our passion is the same; Building Christian Character in the lives of the youth that come to us. Sports, Literacy, Academic Tutoring, Good Nutrition, and Creative Arts are the means we use to accomplish our goal. Our programs are aimed at the heart of our learners.

Why people partner with us

“I have known John for over 40 years and am very familiar with his life and ministry. His message and, especially the way he brings it forth with such visual clarity, is one of the most effective communication tools I've ever seen. I recommend John as a teacher because of the manner in which he lives his life message."

Peter Warren

International YWAM leader and founder of YWAM Denver

“John combines a teacher’s insight with an artist’s impact. His lectures are seasoned with humor and his object lessons are unforgettable. As he forms the clay, he also forms and informs his students, shapes their thinking and fills their lives with truth & beauty. I can highly recommend inviting him."

Timo Vetter

YWAM Wiler, Switzerland

“I have witnessed John Hunter present Lessons From the Potter’s Wheel in various churches, in the Christian school where I teach, and in Africa with teenage mission teams. His messages are rich with meaning and unforgettable. Believers and unbelievers of all ages will be encouraged and blessed by John’s teaching. I give a hearty endorsement for my brother in Christ."
